Fucking Computers

Posted by Scotsman on November 3, 2009 in Geek Stuff |

Well I finally got my new computer today, and everything has turned to hell since.  Wonderful.

I had everything backed up and prepared, so around 9pm tonight the process began of unhooking my old computer, and hooking up my new computer.  I opened it up, took out the packing stuff, had a quick glance around then hooked everything up.  That was a pain in the fucking ass as I can’t move my desk, but I finally managed to get it done.

I boot up, and I get an error that it can’t find a system disk.  I thought Windows 7 was meant to be pre-installed on it, so I was a bit concerned.  However I put in the Windows CD and booted up from that to do a fresh installation.  Well, that did not work out well at all.  Once it got to the part where I choose where to install it – I couldn’t.  The SSD wasn’t showing up, and I was unable to install it on the regular HD as its letter was X:, and Windows will only install on C:.

So I checked the BIOS and yep – not detecting the SSD.  Fuck.  I spend awhile googling, trying things and nada.  This was meant to have been tested before they sent it out too.  There’d been an issue with an Intel SSD Firmware update a few days ago which toasted a ton of SSDs.  The theory in my head was that after testing it all, they decided to give me the new firmware update but never tested afterwards and it had bricked it.

So after a couple of hours and no luck, I started thinking about what the problem could be.  It seems whenever something fucks up, I always forget the simple problems.  I look at what the bigger issues could be, rather than starting from step 1.  So after debating with myself, I start the chore of unhooking it to open it up – and sure enough, the SSD just wasn’t connected.  Yay!  So I connect it back up, and on we go…..

Or not.

The first issue was when I boot up, the monitors turn off.  Oh, wonderful.  Boot into safe mode right?  Well unfortunately another problem, which was it didn’t recognize my USB Keyboard.  Seriously.  In 2009. So fucking retarded.  So I go in the basement and dig out the PS/2 Keyboard, wipe the dust off and hook that up.  I get into safe mode, and it is set up to run the whole installation process.  Okay, no problem.  So I start that up, and it reboots itself once, then does some shit, then reboots itself again….

and I am back to the original problem with the monitors turning off.  I boot into safe mode and “setup is preparing your computer for first use” but OH WAIT Windows cannot complete installation in safe mode.

At this stage I have absolutely no clue how to fix this.  Yay for Windows 7!  It’s bad enough that I’ve been awake for pretty much the last 48 hours due to Mason being sick as all hell, now I have this wonderful stress to deal with.  Sigh.

Working Hard? Or Hardly Working?

Posted by Scotsman on October 30, 2009 in Life |

I always hated that phrase.  Used to hear it all the time at my office job and it just made me want to stick a shiv in someones throat.

Anyway – I’m pretty much doing both at the moment.  I’m hardly working, but when I am working, I am working pretty fucking hard.

My “time off” has been going well.  There’s been a couple of days where I end up having a ton of work that just piles up out of nowhere, but for the most part it has been relatively laid back and easy.  I’m actually going to try and extend it and see if I can come up with a schedule to make this semi-permanent; I’ve really enjoyed relaxing, not having any pressure, and just working when I feel like it.  When I feel motivated it is great and I just do a shitload of work.

Today for example – well I had major problems with my one site Ultimate Poker Bankroll.  Long story short some code made its way in there which basically told search engines “DO NOT COME HERE.  DEINDEX US IMMEDIATELY”.  Yeah.  That was real fun.  I’ve fixed it now, but I’ve no idea how it is going to affect the site in the short-term, and seeing a site that gets 500 search engine hits a day drop to 0 is almost enough to make you vomit.  Imagine you ran your own store or something – and you got 500 people coming in a day, then someone accidently boarded up the doors or something and you realized after a week you were getting no customers?  That’s pretty much it.

NBA season has begun of course, and I’m working on the NBA Betting System and should have that ready by the weekend for hopefully another successful season.

Frustrated at the results of Casino Signup Bonus.  I’m in the hole for 5 figures on that site, with income from it being $0.  I guess it was a nice reminder however.  We’re only 2 months launched, and I was thinking the site would be making 5 figures a month by now.  Just one of those little things that remind me not to get too confident, and to always expect the unexpected when it comes to websites.

Still no new computer.  I must have refreshed the tracking page at least 500 times since Monday night.  I’ve refreshed it 3 times since I started this blog post.  Today I spent most of the day looking out the window when I heard a car going by, seeing if it was the Purolator truck showing up.  Sigh.

Make that 4 times.  GODDAMNIT COMPUTER JUST FUCKING ARRIVE.

Also today I added a ton of reviews to Ultimate Poker Search.  They are:

Assuming my new computer doesn’t arrive Friday I think I’m going to treat myself to a long weekend away from the computer.  Should be nice.  Got a few things to do Friday, but nothing too stressful.

Time for sleep.

It’s always the smallest things….

I always get pissed off at the weirdest things.  I was at that fun place known as Walmart on Friday night.  I was standing in line at McDonalds to get a tea, when the girl beside me spilt her drink.  It was full, and it landed right on my boots and covered them and the bottom of my pants with coke.

To me it was no big deal.  I laughed it off.  Hell I even got the chick napkins and helped to clean it up a little.

But then shit like this makes my blood boil:

The left door?  That’s the entrance to Walmart.  The right door?  That’s the exit.  It even has a big motherfucking sign stating that people should not come in that way as it’s an exit.  There are two separate doors for a reason – there is a lot of goddamn traffic coming in and out of Walmart, and it will stop any jams.  So of course EVERYONE comes through the exit door, because they’re too fucking lazy to walk TWO STEPS and go through the entrance.  Seriously, it’s not that fucking hard.

I found myself walking out the exit door again and again, intentionally banging into people who were coming in that way.

Seriously I want to take every one of those people and slit their throats.

The Sopranos

Posted by Scotsman on October 27, 2009 in Multimedia |

I remember trying to watch the Sopranos something like 8 years ago.  My roommate rented season 1 on DVD, but after a few episodes I was bored shitless and couldn’t stand it.  However I was in the mood for a serious drama after trying out The Shield(and as I was watching it with my wife, I could only go at a pace where we both could watch at the same time), so decided fuck it – to give the Sopranos a try.

Wow.  Just wow.

From here on out there’ll be spoilers about the show.  So if you’ve never watched it yet then stop reading now.

Overall, this was just an amazing fucking show.  It was just so well written.  It wasn’t built on suspense and intrigue – it was just a beautiful story.  What I really liked was how there was so many mundane details, yet they kept it from being mundane.  Like when AJ tried to kill himself, and Tony comes home, starts eating the lincoln logs and takes a minute to notice.  Shit like that was just so beautiful.

There was a few weird things about the show.  Like something would happen, but then they’d not follow up on it for a few episodes(if memory serves me correctly Adriana getting flipped was one of them).  Also the story progression from the end of one season to the beginning of the next was crazy – you’d come back and someone else would be in jail, with only a small mention of how they actually got there.

But really those are just small nitpicks.  Overall The Sopranos was just a fantastic show.  Some of the shit they did in it was so beautifully done.  I really liked how they would bring you back to harsh realities, like when Tony killed Christopher for example.  Or the way Adriana was killed etc.

Also the dream sequences – oh man.  Especially the Kevin Finnerty one.  Just amazing stuff, and I usually hate dream sequences.

Of course – the ending.  What I love about it most is how ambiguous it is – there’s no definitive conclusion.  You can make assumptions based on facts – but there’s no solid conclusion of what happened.   I’ve been speaking to my friends and heard all the arguments about it.  That’s what is so amazing about the ending.  Was the dude just going to the bathroom?  Or was he there to kill Tony?  There’s just so many ways you can read into it all, and that’s what is so great about the show.  Everyone has a theory – but there is no definitive conclusion.

Also think about that ending – how suspenseful it really is.  Yet it’s over the most mundane thing – Meadow unable to park.  Again, just phenomenal.

And now – I feel sad.  Because it is over.  The show is over.  You really feel like you were living through the life of the Sopranos.  It’s one of those shows you just wish would go on indefinitely.  And now I think back – and there is so much stuff that happened that seems so long ago.  Richie.  Tonys mother.  Pussy.  etc etc etc.  Plus being able to watch it again with a whole new viewpoint on them.

Just amazing.    I’ve been loving The Shield, but so far I have to put The Sopranos as my favourite television series ever.
