Movies I’ve Watched Lately

Posted by Scotsman on January 12, 2010 in Multimedia |

Had some “grunt work” to do over the past few days, so been watching movies while I work.  Here’s my opinions:

Been watching a few movies lately.  Thought I’d write out some brief reviews:

What Women Want: – Man, this is one of those movies that I always enjoy, and put at the top of my movies lists.  Yet watching it for about the 6th time in my life I really started to not enjoy it.  I mean the first 2/3 of the movie are good bordering on great – but the final third of it is just goddamn awful.  ***

The Terminal: First half of this is amazing.  Easy ****1/2 if not *****.  Great premise, great story, Hanks is fabulous.  Then it all goes to hell, as they completely americanize it with typical Hollywood BS.  The love story and all the other shit – god, how can one half of a movie be so good, and the other half SO FUCKING BAD?  I can’t even rate it it was that horrible.

Shaun of the Dead: Dunno what the big deal is about this movie.  I mean it was good, but some people treat it as the second coming of christ.  Hot Fuzz was better.  ***

Just Cause: Definitely not a movie for repeat viewings.  I read the book about 10 years ago and watched the movie right after and I think I enjoyed both – might have watched the movie since then – but just watched it again and found it fairly boring.  Basically something that has been done much better in other movies.  Still, the performance of Ed Harris as the psychotic killer on death row is fantastic.  **

The Wedding Singer: Must be about the 9th time I have seen this movie now.  Still a classic, also it gets bonus points for having Journeys “Don’t Stop Believin'” playing when Sandler attempts to get married but dumped at the alter.  One of Sandlers best. *****

The Client: This movie has PRECIOUS MEMORIES for me as it was the first time I read a book then the movie.  Basically I didn’t read that type of novel back then so it was my first ever Grisham book too.  Overall it’s an alright movie, nothing spectacular but a solid performance from Tommy Lee.  ***

Gran Torino: Fuck, YES!  I had the ending spoiled for me so I couldn’t watch it for awhile until I forgot about it – 13 months and 2 days after getting it spoiled I couldn’t remember the specifics so watched it again.  A seriously fucking awesome movie – the performances of everyone bar Eastwood are pretty blah – but Eastwood is just AMAZING in this.  The way he growls etc – god, so great.

SPOILERS AHEAD: I’m still disappointed in the ending though.  I get it – the only way to stop the gangs was that – but man, I just wanted Eastwood to go all RAMBO on their fucking asses.  Completely get what he was going for, but still not what I wanted, especially considering how bad the American justice system is.  I’ll go with ****1/2.

Happy New Year!

Posted by Scotsman on January 5, 2010 in Life |

First blog post of 2010 – woot!

I had a quiet New Years.  Just stayed in with the family and watched Home Alone 1 & 2.  That’s the best way to do it – going out on New Years sucks.  All the pubs are absolutely fucking packed full of amateur drinkers, so it’s never any fun.

On the weekend I went up to Toronto to meet my old buddy Nate.  It was snowing like crazy, and the train took an extra hour to get there.  We watched the early football games, then headed off to the ACC to watch the Raptors vs Spurs.  The Spurs were shockingly bad.  They had Pizza Pizza there and the pizza was just COVERED in pepperoni and we were fucking starved, so ended up having 4 slices each.  Well after the game we are walking down that big tunnelled in area that leads to Front St, when we both at the same time just ran into a corner and puked it all up.  That was great.

Here is a picture from the next morning – pepperoni everywhere!

Overall it was a good night though.  After getting all that pepperoni out of our system, we went to Jack Astors and had a couple of Caesars to settle our stomachs.  I also had their wings which are pretty damn good.  We followed that up with some blueberry girlie drink, a pint of Keiths and then off to another bar where I had my first ever red bull, as we did 3 red bull & vodkas.  Unfortunately it never really impacted me as we went back to his place and I crashed immediately.

Watched TNA Impact & RAW last night.  RAW was fucking AWFUL.  The Bret stuff at the beginning was great, but the rest of the show was horrifically boring and for the show to end with Vince kicking Bret in the balls?  Fuck that.  Awful, awful stuff.

TNA Impact on the other hand was EXCELLENT.  It reminded me of the good old days where you never really knew what was happening next.  What I liked most though was that they didn’t blow their load on one show – rather they set a TON of stuff up, and planted a lot of seeds.  How does Hogan feel about the nWo?  What’s gonna happen with Jarrett?  Who attacked everyone backstage?  What’s Stings role gonna be?  What’s Flairs role gonna be?  Just so much stuff and I really fucking liked it, and can’t wait for the next Impact now.

My Best Christmas Present Ever…

Posted by Scotsman on December 25, 2009 in Life |

…came two days ago, on December 23rd.

Me and Mason were sitting around watching Fred Claus, when out of nowhere he asked if we could go shopping to buy Mummy and Ella(sister) Christmas presents.  Now this in itself was really cool – at previous Christmas and Birthdays he’s never mentioned it and I bring it up and he’s never shown any real interest.

I asked him if he knew what he wanted to get them.  Now when I’ve asked what to get them for birthdays etc previously, he’s always said things he wants like XBox games etc, so I expected the same thing.  So I was pretty stunned when he quickly responded:

“Chocolates for mummy and a barbie doll for Ella.”

He was so sure of himself, he knew what he wanted to get.  It totally caught me off guard, and I thought maybe he had been suggested that by his teacher, or by Janise or something.  So I asked him “Where did you come up with the idea for those presents?”

His response was: “My brain.”

It was just such a cute thing – I dunno I expect if you’re not a parent you won’t fully understand it, but for me it was pretty much one of the greatest moments of my life, and will be a memory I cherish forever.  Today we braved the local mall and bought those gifts, then brought them home and wrapped them and they are sitting under the tree right now.

So yeah thank you Mason for my best christmas present ever – a memory and a moment in life that I will cherish forever.

Merry Christmas everyone.
